Working with ActionFunder to reach nearly 4,000 residents in the areas they serve empowering young people to take environmental action.
Thames Water launched a community campaign that focused on youth and nature, funding local action and raising diverse voices. To amplify impact they partnered with ActionFunder’s national campaign, Backyard Nature. Backyard Nature empowered everyone to access and protect nature on their doorsteps and put the youth voice front and centre.

The challenge
Thames Water is out in the local communities they serve every day of the year, supporting their customers. They wanted to take that engagement to the next level with a celebratory, nature based campaign. The community had to be at the front and centre of the campaign, with a focus on the people typically underrepresented in nature action.
The solution: Thames Water community campaign
Thames Water launched a community campaign that focused on youth and nature, funding local action and raising diverse voices. Working with ActionFunder, the campaign empowered residents local to them to access and protect nature on their doorsteps and put the youth voice front and centre.
The Thames Water community campaign had two main areas of activity. Both used funding as a launchpad for impact. First, they launched a series of microgrants, funding 19 projects that are reducing barriers to nature in Thames Water supply locations. Second, they launched a JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) programme which mobilised 8 youth leaders based in Thames Water supply locations. The leaders were funded to create resources and content that promoted environmental action among communities that are underrepresented in nature action.
Overall, Thames Water engaged nearly 4,000 residents in the areas they serve and built capacity in those communities so that young people will continue to take environmental action.
